INTEREST IN BASKETBALL A SERIES GROWS AGAIN, IT’S 16.7 MILLION: ALL-TIME RECORD FOR LAST 23 YEARS

There are 16.7 million Italians interested in Basketball Serie A, a record for the top league since the start of the Sponsor Value research conducted by StageUp in partnership with Ipsos and considered the auditel of Italian sports, cultural and entertainment events that took place 23 years ago. The figure is up 2 percent from the previous season and shows a 49.2 percent increase from the November 2019 survey where it touched 11.2 mln.

Those interested in Serie A (those who even occasionally follow the league) are predominantly male (59%), residing in the North (43%), belonging to early adulthood (35 and 44 years old, 24%), with middle/high and high economic and income status, individuals who have taken and are taking on responsible roles in society.

There are 2.1 million fans (those who regularly follow the league) and, compared to the Italian population, they see a stronger component of young adults, college graduates, and high income earners.

Sponsor Value, carried out by StageUp in partnership with Ipsos, has been monitoring, since 2000, the following, media attitude, image, sponsor return, and fan bases of major Italian and international sporting events such as, for example, the A, B, and C Series of Soccer, the top leagues of Basketball and Volleyball through F1 and MotoGP.

STATEMENT BY GIOVANNI PALAZZI (StageUp President).

“Sponsor Value confirms basketball’s A Series as one of the most followed and growing leagues. The result is the result of the commitment of the Clubs and the Basketball League with investments both in the spectacle on the court and in the media and narrative way of proposing the sports product. Three data are proof of this: the 20% increase in the total turnover of the 16 participating clubs in the last 3 years; the increase in the share of interested parties following the event on social media from 10% in 2020 to 32% in the June 2024 survey; the average attendance in the sports halls during regular season 2023/24 at 4,109 spectators, the highest since 1991/92. The A Series, also due to the high socio/economic characteristics of the following, is an excellent platform for investors, broadcasters and sponsors due to the communication opportunities to consumers and companies, given the strong presence of entrepreneurs and managers among interested and fans.”
